Front: FLEER '91 B O JACKSON Back: B O JACKSON ROYALS • OUTFIELD Height 6:0, Weight 225, Bats Right, Throws Right Born 11-30-62, Bessemer, AL Home Leawood, KS BIONIC BO As two-sport athletes go, Bo Jackson would easily be considered the role model. Jackson, who runs the football for the Los Angeles Raiders during the fall and winter, spends his spring and summer toiling for the Kansas City Royals in baseball. In 89 collegiate baseball games at Auburn, Jackson batted .335 with 28 homers and 78 RBIs. Bo was considered one of the NCAA's premier players when he batted .401 with 17 homers and 42 RBIs in 42 games for the Tigers in 1985. Bo, Auburn's all-time leading rusher, had already claimed the Heisman Trophy earlier that fall. Jackson, who is also known for his Nike commercials, began his baseball career in 1986 at Memphis. Bo finished that season in Kansas City and was in the majors to stay. Jackson was the first player in Kansas City history to come from a college campus to the majors in the same season. Bo used his blazing speed to beat out an infield single in his first ML at-bat. Jackson hit 22 homers and drove in 53 runs in 1987 for the Royals, and almost matched those totals with a 25-homer, 68-RBI output in 1988. In 1989, though, Jackson set baseball on its ear when he clouted 32 home runs and drove in 105 runs. Bo received the most votes of any American League player for the All-Star Game, homered to lead off the game and was voted the game's MVP. Jackson led the Royals in homers, RBIs, total bases (255), runs (86) and slugging percentage (.495) in 1989. Bo led the Royals again in homers in 1990, despite missing part of the season because of injury. Jackson reached base five times on opening day in 1990 without the ball leaving the infield (three walks, two infields singles). Bo also had three homers and seven RBIs in six innings against the Yankees, before leaving the game with an injury that would place him on the disabled list.
